The Wreath

Holly has traditionally been used to make Christmas wreaths.  Some believe the wreath was originally a symbol of the crown of thorns Jesus wore when he was crucified.  There is a legend that the crown of thorns was wound with holly and that the berries turned red after the crucifixion.  In early Christendom holly was used to decorate houses and churches at Christmas and was called holy tree.  This is probably the origin of the word holly.

A wreath’s made out of evergreens
with leaves that do not die.
At Christmas it’s a symbol
that to Jesus does apply.
In a circle it is formed
to represent a crown.
The crown they gave to Jesus
was to mock and put him down.

Some people really loved God’s Son
and honored him as king.
They laid palm branches on the ground
and did “hosanna” sing.
But others didn’t like the things
that Jesus had to say,
Rejecting God so they could sin
and follow their own way.

The soldiers they mistreated Christ,
his kingship they did scorn.
On Jesus’ head before he died
they placed a crown of thorn.
The wreath became a symbol
of the crown that Jesus wore,
It is through his suf-fer-ing
that Christ opened heaven’s door.

Jesus died upon the cross
and was put into a grave.
To save all men from their sin,
his life he freely gave.
But in the tomb he didn’t stay,
he rose up from the dead,
Proving he was really God
just like he always said.

Christ was sent to earth to die
and pay the price for sin.
He opened up the way to life
so we can enter in.
When we enter in his kingdom
our sin is wiped away.
He is our Lord and Savior
we should follow and obey.

All people have to make a choice
of who will be their king,
Whether to the world or Christ
they will choose to cling.
Most people choose to love the world,
their Savior they reject,
But as the king he will come back
on a day they don’t expect.

As our Savior Christ should have
a crown that’s made of gold,
And on the day that he returns
his glory we’ll behold.
Every eye will see him;
he’ll be worshipped as the king.
And in every nation on the earth,
his praises men will sing.

Remember when you see a wreath,
the crown that Jesus wore,
By dying on the cross for you
he opened heaven’s door.
Jesus wants to be your king
and in your heart to reign.
If you reject him as your Lord,
you mock and cause him pain.
