Content – Prayer

Lord, we all want things that we can’t have. Help us to learn to be content with our lot in life and not covet what hasn’t been given to us. We recognize that covetousness causes us to break other commandments.

Lord, if we don’t covet the material possessions that others have, we won’t be tempted to steal. We will be grateful for what we have, no matter how much or little it is.

Lord, if we are grateful for the spouse you have given us or the situation we are in, we won’t lust after someone else. We will be satisfied and not tempted to commit adultery. If we are faithful to you, family relationships will be strengthened and maintained.

Lord, if we seek to love others in the way you have called us, we won’t have hateful thoughts toward them that can lead to conflict and murder. Loving others will mean that we treat them in an honorable and right way.

Lord, if we don’t want to elevate ourselves above others and covet their position or recognition, we won’t lie or slander them. Lord, enable us to see things for what they are and be truthful in all situations.

Lord, thank you that your commandments are good and that following them leads to a good life. We know that apart from your work in us we can’t follow your law or do what is right. We thank you that our disobedience shows us how much we need you and your forgiveness. Thank you that through the gift of your Son we have a way back to you so we can be made right and therefore do right. May we see the depth of our rebellion and our need for you. May the goodness of your way and truth be evident in our lives as we live according to your commandments.

Amen
